Barentsburg – Meet our Russian comrades in the west

We will visit the settlement of Barentsburg and spend time here on this trip.

However, due to the situation in Ukraine, we have decided not to support the Russian state. All the money someone spends in Barentsburg and/or Pyramiden goes directly to the company Trust Arcticugol which is 100% owned by the Russian state. It can be anything such as food, local guided tours, hotels, harbor fees and souvenirs. We will therefore bring food and coffee from Longyearbyen that we can enjoy during the trip.

It is safe to visit the Russian settlements on Svalbard. The lovely Russian and Ukraine citizens that live here are always very friendly and welcoming.

Heading towards the west coast of Spitsbergen, we will drive through terrain that trappers and miners have used for decades. This trip includes a longer stop in Barentsburg, where we will enjoy a Russian lunch at the hotel.

Barentsburg, Svalbard’s second largest settlement, lies 60 kilometers west of Longyearbyen. It is also known as «Little Russia», where a statue of Lenin watches over the town and its population. You will soon understand that here, not only the landscape is frozen, but also time. At Hotel Barentsburg, we will be served a Russian meal, followed by a tour around the settlement.

On our way there, we will experience the wild and stunning nature of Svalbard. We will drive through the narrow valleys, Bødalen and Todalen, before we get to the open valley, Colesdalen. If the conditions are good we will pass the abandoned mining town, Coles Bay, before we continue following the coast line to Barentsburg. On our way back, we will drive through the great Grøndalen. If the weather is nice, we can drive up to the glacier, Tavlebreen, and enjoy the view over Van Mijenfjorden. The trip continues up to the valley, Fardalen, and along the Longyear glacier down to Longyearbyen.
