2 Day Snowmobile trip to Pyramiden

Due to the situation in Ukraine, we have decided not to support the Russian state. All the money someone spends in Barentsburg and/or Pyramiden goes directly to the company Trust Arcticugol which is 100% owned by the Russian state. It can be anything such as food, local guided tours, hotels, harbor fees and souvenirs.

It is safe to visit the Russian settlements on Svalbard. The lovely Russian and Ukraine citizens that live here are always very friendly and welcoming.

Surrounded by high, rugged mountains and the enormous Nordenskiöld glacier, lies the abandoned Russian town Pyramiden. It is beautifully located in Billefjorden, north of Isfjorden. On this 2 day trip, we cross frozen fjord and glaciers by snowmobile to get to Pyramiden. A cosy hotel and traditional Russian food will warm us up.

Day 1
We will pick you up at your hotel and drive out to our Explorer’s club. Here, we will dress up and go through the route for the trip, before we pack our sleds and prepare us for a ride in extreme conditions. Pyramiden is located around 120km north-east, it will take around 4 hours driving to get there. But of course, we will have stops on the way to take pictures or enjoy the view.

We head out into the wide valley Adventdalen where we pass areas with a lot of Norwegian coal-mining history. If we are lucky we can see some reindeers, looking for food in the snow. If the sea ice in the fjords is good enough, we cross Tempelfjorden, making a stop at Villa Fredheim – a famous trapper’s cabin. Then we drive up onto a glacier plateau. If we cannot cross the fjord, we will drive around, and climb onto the glacier plateau bit earlier where endless whiteness will surround us. In rough weather, the terrain might be a bit challenging, but you will get the real feeling of being in the Arctic.

NOK 9.990,-

Passenger 8990,-
(Optional Insurance NOK 200)

  • Available on request from March to May
  • Duration 2 days, Distance approx 230km

We will follow the glacier until we reach Billefjorden. Here we might see some seals, relaxing on the sea ice. Where there are seals, there are often polar bears, so we need to be on guard for the King of the Arctic. After crossing Billefjorden, we will arrive in the Russian ghost town, where a statue of Lenin still watches over the town and the mighty Nordenskiöld glacier. Hotel Tulipan is the only operating building. This is where we will be served a Russian dinner and can try Russian Vodka in the bar. We spend the night in twin rooms at the hotel.

Day 2
After breakfast, we will get a tour around the town. In its greatest days, Pyramiden was one of the best places to live in the Soviet Union, with a philosophy based on unity and collectivism. After the sightseeing, we will begin the second day on snowmobiles, in Svalbard’s wild and stunning nature.

Weather and driving conditions will determine the route for the day. Icebergs frozen like sculptures in the sea ice, majestic glacier fronts, and the desolate landscape, will give you the feeling of being alone in the Arctic. Before returning to Longyearbyen, we will find a nice and safe place to have lunch. There are still many kilometres to Longyearbyen, so they day is not over yet.

When arriving in Longyearbyen, there’s time for a debrief and a little treat, before we drive you back to your hotel.
