Embark on a fascinating day trip to encounter the unique wildlife of Svalbard up close! Utilizing our closed and comfortable RIB boats, we venture to a renowned walrus colony daily. Upon reaching the destination, we make a landing on the beach, providing a prime opportunity to observe these amusing and extraordinary animals amidst the Arctic landscape.

The walrus, one of the Arctic’s most intriguing creatures, becomes a captivating spectacle during our summer trips. These fascinating beings spend much of their summer basking on the beach and feasting on clams in the surrounding waters. Our comfortable, closed, and heated boat, equipped with panoramic views, a bar, and a toilet, ensures a delightful journey.

Our adventure commences with a scenic crossing of the beautiful Isfjord towards Borebukta, accompanied by the diverse bird species nesting in Svalbard, including the frequent visitor, the Atlantic puffin. With an average of 10-30 walruses in the colony on any given day, standing on the beach in silence allows us to eavesdrop on their amusing disputes over the best sunbathing spots. Capture these perfect moments with your camera, as our guides point out interesting birds along the way.

In case weather conditions hinder a beach landing, the aft deck of the boat still provides a close-up view of these magnificent creatures. While wildlife encounters can’t be guaranteed, the walrus is a frequent visitor in this area, and our guides make every effort to locate them, ensuring an unforgettable experience.

Upon returning to the boat, a delectable lunch awaits as we set course for the Bore glacier. This stunning expanse of blue ice paints the bay with floating icebergs, bergabits, and growlers. Witnessing the glacier “calving,” where ice cascades from its front, adds to the spectacle. After exploring the glacier front, we commence our journey back to Longyearbyen.

During the early season (May and June), the presence of sea ice is likely, restricting the walrus’s access to the beach. In such cases, landing becomes impractical, but we delight in observing these remarkable creatures from the comfort of our boat.

Important information

We can never guarantee wildlife, however, this is a well-known hauling-out place for walruses. Better Moments has the right to change the route and destination of the trip due to the weather conditions. The weather forecast is never completely reliable in the areas we are travelling in, therefore like on all other boat trips, we always want to go out and see for ourselves if we can reach our destination. In case the weather prevents us from getting all the way, we will spend the day in the beautiful Isfjorden, visiting glaciers and searching for other wildlife. 

We require a minimum of 6 persons on this trip. The minimum age is 4 years. Children under 12 years old: NOK 800 discount.
